Altar Servers Servers assist the priest celebrant during Mass. In this role, they light the candles, bear incense, lead the entrance and offertory processions, hold the Missal during the prayers, and prepare the altar for celebration of the Eucharist. Children may begin serving in fourth grade (please contact Peggie Hansen, Director of Religious Education, to inquire about training) Time: 1.25 hours per Mass | Daily Mass Servers Daily Mass servers set up for daily Mass, proclaim the readings, and serve at the altar. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion The Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (EMHC) assists the priest in the distribution of the Body of Christ at Mass and the Precious Blood at Christmas, Easter, and Corpus Christi. Must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Diocesan training is required prior to serving. Time: 10 minutes per Mass | Funeral Mass Servers Funeral servers assist the priest celebrant at funeral liturgies by leading the entrance and exit processions, holding the holy water bucket for sprinkling, preparing the altar for the celebration of the Eucharist, and bearing incense. Funeral servers are contacted as needed. Time: Sporadically, as needed, 1+ hour per funeral Mass | |
Gift Bearers Gift Bearers present the monetary offering, as well as the bread and wine, to the priest. A family or several people are needed for this role. Time: 5 minutes per Mass | Greeters Help provide a simple act of hospitality by meeting people outside before Mass, opening the door, and welcoming them to Blessed Sacrament on behalf of the parish community. Greeters help Mass attendees get in the spirit to worship, promote community, are a welcoming presence to those passersby, and provide practical services (help with car doors, holding an umbrella, extending an arm to the elderly, answering questions, etc.) when needed. Lectors Lectors proclaim the Word of God at Mass. This person must have received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Two lectors are scheduled at each Sunday liturgy, with one also reading the Prayers of the Faithful. Time: 1+ hour per Mass | Mass Coordinators (Sacristans) Mass Coordinators set up for Mass and clean up afterward. Beforehand, the Mass coordinator sets out the hosts, water and wine cruets, patens, and chalices, appropriate to the liturgy. At the end of Mass, he or she puts away whatever will not be necessary for the next liturgy and washes the liturgical linens. Time: 1.5 hours per Mass | |
Ushers Ushers welcome and assist congregants at each liturgy by distributing worship aids, directing worshippers to open seating, collecting the offering, facilitating the communion procession, handing out bulletins, and cleaning up the pews after Mass. Time: 1+ hour per Mass |
Blessed Sacrament Choir We sing in four-part harmony at one Sunday Mass each week, as well as other important liturgies in the liturgical year (e.g., Christmas Eve, etc.). Rehearsal is on Wednesday nights from 6:30-8:00 PM. The choir does not rehearse during the summer months.
